It’s Ghalib’s birthday today.

Born Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan, on 27 December 1797, he died on February 15, 1869.

He was the preeminent Urdu and Persian-language poet during the last years of the Mogul Empire including the First Indisn War of Independence in 1857, known in India as ‘Ghadar’ and in Britain as the ‘Great Mutiny’.

Ghalib saw it all and the dethroning of the last Mogul, Bahadur Shah Zafar.
