PM Modi To Launch Ro-Ro Ferry Service – ‘Dream Project’ – In Gujarat Today: 10 Points

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Gujarat – his third visit this month to his home state where assembly elections will be held soon- where he will launch various projects including the Rs. 615-crore ‘roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro)’ ferry service. The 31-km service, described by PM Modi as his “dream project” earlier this week, will run between Ghogha in Bhavnagar district and Dahej in Bharuch in the Gulf of Cambay and will to cut down travel time between the two towns from “seven or eight hours to just over an hour”. The Prime Minister, who will take the ferry on its inaugural journey, will also address a gathering upon arrival in Dahej.

  1. PM Modi will inaugurate the first phase of the ferry service which will reduce the distance between Ghogha in the Saurashtra region and Dahej in south Gujarat from 310 kilometres by road to 30 kilometres.
  2. Many working in the diamond-cutting and polishing hub of Surat in south Gujarat belong to Saurashtra in the western part of the state and will hugely benefit from the service.
  3. Ajay Bhadoo, Chief Executive Officer of the Gujarat Maritime Board which is executing the Ro-Ro project, said the first phase of the service is meant for passengers.
  4. In the second phase – which is expected to be ready in two months – cars can also be carried between the two towns.
  5. “It is a complex project which involves complicated marine structure of the Gulf of Cambay, on which it is built,” Mr Bhadoo said.
  6. In the final phase, the ferry would also have the facility to carry trucks between the two regions.
  7. The idea of the ferry service was first conceived in early 1960s. PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for the project in January 2012, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
  8. From Dahej, the Prime Minister will leave for Vadodara, where he is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for various developmental and infrastructure projects worth over Rs. 1,140 crore.
  9. The PM will also address a public meeting at the sprawling Navlakhi Ground in the city in the afternoon and may hold a roadshow before flying to Delhi.
  10. The Prime Minister has made multiple visits to Gujarat ahead of the elections. He addressed a massive rally in capital Gandhinagar earlier this week. Last week, the PM inaugurated various projects in Rajkot, his hometown Vadnagar, Gandhinagar and Bharuch.
