Will women, including those between 10 and 50 years of age, be allowed to enter into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala? The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce its verdict on Friday on the pleas challenging this practice. Pinning their hopes on the Supreme Court, women groups are waiting for the judgement by the five-judge Constitution Bench.
The Sabarimala temple houses the deity Lord Ayyappa in a “naishtika brahmacharya” (perennially celibate) avatar or state. The Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had reserved its verdict in the matter on August 1 after an eight days long hearing. Notably, the Kerala government has been changing its stand on the contentious issue.
