After the India vs Pakistan match, which proved to be a lop-sided affair, Bangladesh will now take on Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2018. Both teams won their opening matches against Sri Lanka and would be desperate to win today’s match as the winner would take the top spot in Group B. Even though both the teams are through to the next round of Asia Cup, the players would want to take some confidence from today’s win. Masharafe Mortaza and Asghar Afghan would be very happy with the way their players performed in the first match and would want to continue the winning run.
00:15 IST: Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh Captain: I think Afghanistan outplayed us from the 40th over in the first innings. Our batting was not up to the mark and the bowling in last 10 overs was poor. We have to be fresh for tomorrow’s big match. It is hard to recover from the heat and back to back matches. Hopefully we will come up with something better tomorrow and play hard. Tamim is going back home. Mushy had a good rest, Mustafizur is coming back from an injury as well so they will play tomorrow since it is a game of consequence.
00:13 IST: What a win for Afghanistan!!!! A thumping 136-run victory over Bangladesh make them the topper of Group A. Courtesy Rashid Khan, the birthday boy, who smashed a blitzkrieg 31-ball fifty to take Afghanistan’s total to 255 runs. Bangladesh were never in the match, it seems, when it came to batting. No Tamim, no Mushfiqur and Bangladesh managed only 119 runs.
19: 42 pm: 158/6 after 40 overs. With ten overs to go, Afghanistan will have to play out of their skin to put a challenging total here.
19: 16 pm: Afghanistan have lost their fifth wicket, Hashmatullah Shahidi is playing a lone battle for his team. It remains to be seen whether Shahidi can bat throughout the innings for Afghanistan. Shakib picked his third wicket of the match as he clean bowled Shenwari.
19: 04 pm: After 28 overs, Afghanistan are 115/4. They need plenty of more runs to put a respectable total on board. Hashmatullah Shahidi is batting on 43 and he needs to play a big knock for his team here.
18: 45 pm: Afghanistan lose another wicket and Bangladesh are in total control of the match at the moment. Shakib picked the big wicket of Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan who charged down the wicket, misread the line and was clean bowled. Having lost 4 batsmen with 25 overs still to go, Afghanistan should once again focus on playing all 50 overs.
18: 23 pm: After 20 overs, Afghanistan are 80/3. Shakib Al Hasan got Bangladesh the much-needed wicket of set batsman Shahzad. Shahzad charged down the track and hammered one towards long on where debutant Hider made his presence felt with a brilliant catch.
18: 05 pm: Shahzad is batting sensibly at the moment, which is the need of the hour for Afghanistan. The partnership seems to be building and Afghanistan think tank would want these two to bat for a longer duration. On the other hand, Bangladesh need a breakthrough at the earliest.
17: 43 pm: Bangladesh are in control of the match at the moment – thanks to two early breakthroughs from Hider – who has impressed everybody with his debut so far. Mohammad Shahzad is still at the crease and being one of the more experienced batsmen in the squad, he needs to play a different role for his team today and spend more time at the crease rather than looking for big strokes.
17: 30 pm: Abu Hider claimed his second wicket of the match as he clean bowled Rahmat Shah with a beautiful inswinger. The ball swung into the batsman who was left clueless. This is proving to be an excellent debut for Hider.
17: 14 pm: Bangladesh have got their first breakthrough. Abu Hider claimed a wicket in the first over of his debut as Ihsanullah hit one straight into the hands of Mithun. The bowler was hit for two consecutive boundaries off the last two balls before he was dismissed. Good start for Bangladesh.
17: 00 pm: Mohammad Shahzad and Ihsanullah will open the innings for Afghanistan. Rubel Hossain with the new ball for Bangladesh. Afghanistan batsmen should try and play the entire 50 overs and put a challenging total in front of Bangladesh – who are playing without their two key batsmen today.
