Pakistan no Country For Muslims? Minister Wants Only Hindu, Christian, Ahmadi Security Guards

A Pakistani minister has ordered non-Muslim security detail after he received threats from Islamists. Pakistan’s intelligence has started background checks on security men and they have told the minister to restrict his movements.

Pakistan’s provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah ordered that only non-Muslim officers be deployed for his security. The minister is not satisfied with his security and has hired a private firm.

He has also asked the Punjab police to provide him with a list of Christian, Hindu and Ahmadi officers in Punjab. He will reportedly select men from this list to replace Muslims from his security detail. Till then, he has arranged for Christian security guards from the private firm he has hired.

Sanaullah had got embroiled in a controversy when he said that there was minor difference between Ahmadis and Muslims. The statement caused outrage in the sizable conservative Muslim population. A section of people had asked for his resignation. The comment came amid allegations by right-wing parties that government was trying to appease Ahmadis.

Islamist group Tehreek Labaik Ya Rasool Allah had organised protests against the minister for his comment. In 2011, Punjab’s governor Salman Taseer was killed by his police guard for his views on blasphemy laws.
